This shouldn't come as a surprise - over 50% of US mobile phone users now have smartphones. And that number is sure to increase. For businesses this presents a huge opportunity to connect with customers in a new modern way. Today we'll cover the basics of mobile websites, and show you a simple and inexpensive way to create your own mobile site for your business.

So what is a mobile website?
It's a simplified website that's designed to be viewed on a mobile device, like a smartphone or tablet. When visitors come to your website on a mobile device, your site detects that visitors are using a mobile device and directs the visitor to your mobile optimized site, rather than your regular website.
Take a look at the pictures below. The first shows Motel 6's regular website on an iPhone. It's really hard to read. The second picture is Motel 6's mobile website - much easier to read. The text is bigger, and the navigation is simplified. If I was looking for lodging, I'd definitely prefer using the mobile version, and I bet your customers would too.

What a mobile website isn't
A mobile site is not the same as a mobile app, which must be downloaded onto a mobile device in order to use. While a mobile app can make sense for some properties, for small businesses, a mobile website is usually an easier, and less expensive, way of connecting with customers.

How to create a mobile website?
Many website software programs now come with a free option to convert your standard website to a mobile version, so check that first. If your software doesn't offer that option, you can always hire a developer to design a site, but that can be expensive. For those of you with no budget to build a mobile site, you're still in luck. There's free software that allows you to create a mobile version of your site in minutes, and it's easy to use.

If you're an iPhone user, check out M.dot. Their free app (available at Apple App Store ) allows you to create a simple mobile site directly on your iPhone. Having used the app myself, I can personally attest to its simplicity. I don't have any programming skills, and I was able to create a mobile site in less than 30 minutes. M.dot also allows you to add a number of cool features, like “Click to Call” buttons, and a mobile map to your business, which should make it easier for customers to find you and spend their money.

If you have an Android powered device, you can use a free program from Google Sites to create a mobile version of your site. The functionality is similar to M.dot. Check out their video:



As you can see, basic mobile websites are easy to make, and inexpensive, even free. So make it easy for your customers to connect with your business, whether that's from their desktop computer, tablet, or smart phone, and start planning your mobile website.
