| Water cost for hotels can be high. Many hotels wash bed sheets, towels and other linens after each use. This is not only a waste of water, but it is also expensive. Sure some guests expect their linens to be washed daily, but more and more guests understand the importance of saving water, detergent (and money). It is up to hotel staff to take advantage of this awareness, and help save valuable resources. There are several ways that hotels can encourage their guests to limit the need to launder linens on a daily basis. • Upon check-in, ask guests if they would like new linens daily, or if they would help conserve water and accept new linens every other day. Most people do not wash their own linens on a daily basis, so many guests will be happy to wait a day or two before having linens changed in their rooms. • Provide instructions and message signs in each room indicating the procedure to reuse towels and sheets - For instance, if guests place their towels on the towel racks, towels will not be washed. However, towels left on the floor will be washed. • Provide sufficient space for guests to hang their towels to dry. Too few towel racks force guests to cram their towels together on a rack, or throw the towels on the floor. As a result, towels remain damp and guests will expect a new towel daily. However, by investing a few dollars and providing more towel racks, guests can easily hang their towels to dry and reuse them later–saving your hotel money in the long run. • Be enthusiastic about your reuse program and thank guests for their participation. How much water and money can a hotel expect to save? If your hotel currently washes linens daily, and half of your guests participate in the reuse program (and have their linens changed every other day), your hotel can reduce water consumption and laundering costs by 25%. If all of your guests participate in the program, water and laundering costs will be, at minimum, cut in half! | |
