Bedding Basics: What's the Difference?
October 1st 2015
Decisions, Decisions, Decisions
It can be easy in the modern world to become overwhelmed with too many choices. Should you choose a bedspread, coverlet or a duvet? Should you get a cotton polyester blend, 100% polyester or a polyester microfiber blend? What decorative bedding items should I purchase to complete the look I am going for? It’s time to sit back, relax and leave the work to your National Hospitality Supply blog team. We have sifted through loads of information to break it down for you.Bedspreads
Let’s start with examining the traditional bedspread. Bedspreads are made to be larger in size to cover the entire bed, down to the floor. Traditionally, hospitality bedspreads are available in polyester or in a cotton polyester blend. Bedspreads are also broken down into three layers. The top layer, the bottom layer and the inside fill. The average fill on a National Hospitality bedspread is 6 oz. However, we offer made to order bedspreads where you can add as much fill as you like! There are multiple patterns, fills and fabrics available for purchase on the National Hospitality Website. I will break down the fabric options in Fabric Choices: Pro & Cons. The downside to a traditional bedspread is that it can be quite bulky, not very breathable and it does not handle frequent laundering as well as some other options do. However, it is a nice option if your housekeeping team has many rooms to change over quickly or if you prefer a minimal décor look. The next item which is gaining popularity quickly within the hospitality industry and is known for creating a clean and modern look is the coverlet. A coverlet is designed to be a lighter weight bedding option that is perfect for summer lodging locations or for those who have a property in a warmer climate. Coverlets contain a thin layer of batting which means they can be used in place of a bedspread or a duvet. Coverlets are made to cover the entire bed, just past the box spring. Ideally, many properties that choose to go with a coverlet also purchase a decorative bed skirt, bed scarf and bolster pillows to enhance the look of their guest rooms. If you feel that you like the coverlet but you need more warmth, they can be used as an additional layer over a duvet. The advantage of going with a coverlet is that it is cost effective and an easy way to revamp your guest room. If you have a knack for design, this is the perfect option for you because you can mix and match hundreds of different styles by also choosing coordinating bed skirts, bed scarves and bolster pillows. A duvet is made of a top layer and bottom layer of polyester or a poly/cotton blend and filled with a lofty amount of down or synthetic down alternative. They have more loft than a bedspread due to the nature of the fill and are finished with a large box stitch quilting pattern. In the hospitality industry it makes the most sense to purchase the synthetic down because it is hypoallergenic. This is a good alternative for those hotels looking for a more luxurious and fluffy bedding feel. If a duvet is chosen to be used there is no need for extra blankets or quilts underneath because duvets contain warmth very well. This is a nice option to reduce the complexity of bed making as the duvet only requires sheets underneath. The duvets at National Hospitality have a 10” sewn box pattern to prevent the synthetic down from shifting and feature a 12 oz. or 6 oz. fill option. Duvets have the option of being protected by a duvet cover or they can be used by themselves without the duvet cover. However they would require more frequent laundering without the duvet cover. Much like the coverlets, the biggest advantage to using a duvet is that as a hotel owner you can easily transform your guest rooms with new duvet covers, decorative pillows and bed scarfs.
